Chonburi is the closest seaside town to Bangkok, only 80 kilometres from Bangkok. It is a hub for future investment and tourism development; it is seen by many to be the next big thing in Thailand. One of the main attractions of Chonburi is the annual water buffalo festival. The water buffalo festival consists of over 300 racing buffalos spurred on by bareback jockeys with wooden whips, while thousands of spectators cheer. The water buffalo play a large part in Thai culture and the economy, the festival is seen as a celebration of the water buffalo and a chance for the agricultural farmers to relax and enjoy themselves. The Water buffalo festival takes place in mid October each year.
